was to try such as were accused as false prophets or
blasphemers. This was a kind of ecclesiastical court. The
other, with which the next chapter opens, was before Pilate,
the Roman governor of Judea at that time; he principally took
cognizance of criminal things, such especially as concerned
the peace of the country, considered as part of the Roman
empire.
